America’s Fundraiser
So there has been talk on the interwebs of the possibility of America starting a program to promote donations to help America out of the economic slump from normal citizens on a Radiohead “pay what you want” basis.
Okay first reaction “We already pay taxes, hellz no!”
Obviously that’s what most people will think immediately. But let’s think about it. What did we elect Obama because of? Well a myriad of reasons of course, but the main similarity is that government was seemingly more and more of its on entity rather than an organization of the American people. We were losing our democracy and community and were starting to be ruled. And we don’t like being ruled.
That being said, I would assume we are trying to get back the for the people BY the people mentality, and if this is true, why can’t we pitch in more than taxes? Obviously I would think no less of people who chose not to, I’m all about free choice. I’m just saying it’s not a bad idea.
If you were ever working on a group project, and one person in the group was more priveledged or had connections that allowed the group to make the project significantly better (whether with materials from their mansion of a house, or a father’s important friend giving an interview, etc.), and they willingly gave it, it brings the group together and makes them all committed to this awesome project they are working on. The same idea applies. </college student example>
Just some thoughts.
We need to be the people we want to see in the world </hippie blog post ending>
